Teardrop Camping Trailers WEIGHT Comparison. Aluminum vs. Wood or Fiberglass
When looking at an off-road capable camping trailer, whether it is a teardrop, square-drop, or adventure trailer, it is important to consider weight. Weight will become a factor when looking at the GVWR and tongue weight capacities of your tow vehicle and deciding how much gear you can bring along.
Many people who want to get out and experience the great outdoors will want to bring a lot of gear with them, whether it is purely camping gear, recovery gear, gear for rock climbing, mountain biking, or more.
In most teardrops, square drops, and adventure trailers the factor that makes up the bulk of the weight, beyond the frame is the body of the trailer. There are 3 main materials that can be used for the construction of the body; wood, fiberglass, or aluminum.
When looking at a direct comparison, a fiberglass shell will be approximately 30 to 40% heavier when constructed with the same dimensions and design. Wood, although on the surface, is lighter when compared to the same mass of aluminum, is much weaker, and will require significantly more wood to achieve similar structural rigidity. For example, to replicate the rigidity of a 0.275″ sheet of aluminum, you would need a 0.625″ (5/8″) sheet of wood. Since aluminum is much stronger and more rigid, you can use less aluminum to make the same-shaped trailer making it significantly lighter.
